The Hebron School District in Tolland County issued a notice to the community that due to the speed of the spread of the virus within the Gilead Hill School, it will have to go remote.
According to district officials, the school will reopen for in-person learning on Tuesday, Sept. 14.
Schools Superintendent Thomas Baird said that the number of COVID-19 cases in staff and students is at a similar level of infections during other periods of high transmission periods like January and April earlier this year.
“The town and county are currently rated as code red, having a high infection rate.
“This began on Monday (Sept. 6) with cases within the Parks and Recreation PREP before and after school program and continued (on Tuesday, Sept. 7) at the Gilead school.”
Baird said that “it is probable that there has been in-program transmission within the PREP program and it is probable that there has been in school transmission within some preschool and some kindergarten classes at Gilead Hill School.”
The students and staff members considered to be close contacts to anyone who has a confirmed case of COVID-19 have been placed in quarantine, though the Hebron Elementary School will remain open for in-person learning.
“Some families have asked how they can help,” Baird said. “Please get vaccinated if you are not already vaccinated. When vaccination is available for your child, please get them vaccinated.
“Do not send your child to school if they are sick. The Delta variant is often presented with stomach illness in addition to COVID-19 symptoms.”
